# Why does my weight change from day to day?

A scale measures total body weight, not body fat alone. Short-term changes can include water and the food and drink in your body. One reading cannot identify the cause of a change or tell you whether a nutrition plan is working.

## The number is real; the explanation may not be

A scale can accurately show that you weigh more than yesterday while saying nothing about which tissue or fluid changed. Drinking 500 mL of water adds roughly half a kilogram of mass before that water is lost. That is simple mass accounting, not half a kilogram of fat gain.

The same caution applies to an unusually low reading. A smaller number does not establish better nutrition, better recovery, or progress toward every health goal.

## Cycles can add context, not certainty

A 2023 study reported higher body weight during menstruation, with the difference largely associated with extracellular water. This supports considering cycle context; it does not provide a correction that should be subtracted from everyone’s scale reading.

If you track cycle information, note patterns in your own records without assuming that every change has that explanation. A pattern is a question to explore, not a diagnosis.

## Make comparisons less noisy

NHS guidance recommends using the same scales in the same place and weighing at a consistent time, preferably in the morning. Consistency helps distinguish a change in measurement conditions from a change in body weight.

Weighing every day is not required. Choose an approach that is useful rather than distressing, and follow any schedule your healthcare team has given you.

Check comparability before explaining the difference.
| Comparison | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Morning versus evening | Food, drink, and time of day differ. |
| Different scales | Equipment and placement differ. |
| Similar conditions over time | More comparable, but still not a direct body-fat measurement. |

## Do not compensate for a single reading

Our practical suggestion is to write down the observation before inventing a cause: “This reading is higher; the conditions differed.” That is more defensible than “I gained fat, so I need to skip food.”

Unexplained, persistent changes or changes accompanied by symptoms deserve medical attention. Do not use a trend line to explain away swelling, faintness, or another concern. If you have a condition with specific weight-monitoring instructions, those instructions take priority.

## Sources and limits

These sources support the claims beside which they are linked. Practical checklists and invented examples are POWR’s educational interpretation, not findings from a trial of the app.
